Review

The Marine Turbine Technologies (MTT) Y2K Superbike, released in 2002, is an unusual motorcycle born from the mind of a turbine engine expert. Unlike traditional superbikes, it uses a Rolls-Royce Allison Model 250-C18 turboshaft engine typically found in helicopters. This makes it a very different machine compared to other high-performance bikes of the era, such as the Suzuki Hayabusa or Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R, which relied on powerful inline-four engines to achieve their speed.

At the heart of the Y2K is the turbine engine, producing a staggering 320.0 HP (233.6 kW) at 52000 RPM. The torque output is equally impressive, with 576.3 Nm (58.8 kgf-m or 425.1 ft.lbs) available at just 2000 RPM. This immense power propels the bike to a claimed top speed of 402.3 km/h (250.0 mph). Despite its powerful engine, the Y2K weighs in at 208.7 kg (460.0 pounds). The fuel tank has a capacity of 34.00 litres (8.98 US gallons), necessary to feed the thirsty turbine. With a seat height of 800 mm (31.5 inches), the bike sits relatively low, though this may vary slightly depending on any adjustability features present.

Riding the Y2K is a unique experience. The turbine engine delivers power in a very different way from a conventional internal combustion engine. There's a characteristic spool-up sound as the turbine gains speed, and the power delivery is incredibly smooth and linear. Due to the turbine engine it is not a track-focused motorcycle. The riding position is fairly neutral, allowing for some comfort. The bike's weight is manageable, but the immense power requires respect and a very skilled rider.

The MTT Y2K Superbike isn't for everyone. Its high price, specialized maintenance requirements, and extreme performance make it a machine for a select few. It appeals to those who want something truly unique and unconventional, a motorcycle that defies expectations. It is a statement piece of engineering, a machine that prioritizes raw power and novelty over practicality or everyday usability. The Y2K is ultimately a conversation starter, a rolling sculpture that happens to be capable of incredible speed.
